What Are Implant Dentures?

Essentially, implant dentures are exactly what they sound like. The denture will look like what you might be used to seeing: a set of false teeth held together by a gum-colored base. What makes this a more secure option, though, are the dental implants that will hold the denture in place. These titanium posts will anchor your denture to your jawbone just like natural teeth instead of relying on natural suction or adhesive. Dr. Parker can outfit you with a permanent implant denture, or a removable type depending on your unique situation.

Fixed/Permanent Implant Dentures

A dental restoration is considered “permanent” or “fixed” when it can only be removed by a dentist. For a fixed/permanent implant denture, Dr. Parker will choose four-to-six strategic locations along your jawbone to set the implants. Once they’re anchored to the bone, your denture is there to stay!

Removable Implant Dentures

Alternatively, Dr. Parker can attach clips or ball sockets to your implant denture. The denture will still be held down by two-to-five implants, but you’ll be able to “snap” it on and off at your convenience. Removable implant dentures are ideal for patients with less bone density or who are nervous about a permanent denture. Keep in mind, though, that a removable type will have to be taken out for cleaning on a daily basis.

The Implant Denture Process

To get you started on your implant denture journey, we’ll schedule a consultation to get to know you and your replacement needs. Part of this consultation includes examining your teeth and oral structure. Dental implants need a strong, dense jawbone to stay in place, and we want to ensure your treatment is successful. If we do discover a complication, don’t worry. We can often find solutions so that you can still receive dental implants! From there, Dr. Parker will design your denture and place the implant posts. It will take some time for your mouth to heal properly (about three-to-six months!), but once your new implant denture is secured into place, it will be well worth the wait.

Am I a Candidate for Implant Dentures?

Most adults in good health are good candidates for implant dentures. Here’s what we’ll be looking for during your consultation:

  • Enough jawbone density to support dental implants
  • A clean bill of oral health (that means no active conditions like cavities or gum disease)
  • Ability to undergo minor surgery

Know that even if you don’t check all these boxes, you might still be able to receive successful treatment once your complications are addressed. That’s why we recommend visiting for a consultation!

Benefits of Combining Dentures & Dental Implants

The major benefit that patients enjoy with implant dentures is their much-improved stability. Thanks to the dental implants, this type of denture doesn’t slip. But there are other advantages of this design as well, such as:

  • Jawbone loss prevention
  • Stronger bite
  • Easier chewing
  • Increased longevity
  • A fuller smile
  • False teeth that look natural
  • Improved comfort
