The start of the new year is a great time to reevaluate your habits to see if there’s anything you can do to improve your overall quality of life. Naturally, your preventive dentist recommends taking a few steps to protect your teeth and gums throughout 2025. If you’re thinking of making a few New Year’s resolutions to improve your overall oral health, here are 3 suggestions that are worth considering.

1. Make Flossing an Everyday Habit

Around 37.3% of adults floss less than daily, and the CDC reports that roughly one in three Americans don’t floss at all. That said, flossing is the best way to get rid of any plaque that may have built up between your teeth or below your gumline, thus significantly lowering your risk for cavities and gum disease. As such, if flossing isn’t already a daily habit for you, you should make an effort to turn it into one.

You may find it difficult to remember to floss at first, so try leaving yourself a reminder on your phone. It can also help to put the floss in a place where you’re unlikely miss it – such as right next to your toothbrush and toothpaste.

2. Start Brushing for Two Minutes at a Time

When you brush your teeth, each session should last for two minutes. However, chances are that you’re brushing for significantly less than that, which means you’re likely missing a lot of plaque that could ultimately contribute to serious oral health issues. For the sake of your smile, you should take whatever steps you need to in order to ensure that you’re brushing for a sufficient amount of time.

The easiest way to keep this resolution is to set a timer whenever it’s time to use your toothbrush. That way, you don’t have to guess how long you’ve been cleaning your teeth. Remember to keep the brush tilted at a 45-degree angle; this will make it easier to clean near the gumline.

3. Change Your Eating Habits

It goes without saying that the foods and beverages you consume can have an impact on your oral health. If you’re concerned about the state of your smile, it’s definitely worth taking the time to consider your diet and make any necessary adjustments.

Try to limit your exposure to anything that’s high in sugar; such foods and beverages could easily lead to cavities if not enjoyed in moderation. In the meantime, try eating more crisp fruits and vegetables. They act like natural toothbrushes, cleaning plaque from your teeth while you chew them.
